Fifteen Department of Modern Dance seniors will also be presenting premieres.

The University of Utah Department of Modern Dance senior class is pleased to present two weekends of “Shirts and Skins” premiering Thursday, March 31. Each senior will showcase a final work or production that represents their individual research studies, creative processes, and choreographic voice.

In her newest work, senior Tori Duhaime investigates movement and culture captured from skiing and skate films to develop gestures based on a fabricated limited space. “I am interested in movement as a whole beyond the constraints by the term dance and utilizing my background in urban action sports. I refer to it as style by survival,” said Duhaime.

Sarah Stott's five dancers take the audience on a journey through different creative worlds shaped by music, lighting, and nuanced movement. Her piece explores performative and emotional states by questioning identity in an ever-changing environment. "My work utilizes a wide range of artistic expression to create a world for the viewers,” explained Stott.

“I have been able to explore cultures within cultures and how within every story lies a different explanation of reality,” says Kellie Rae Williams. “My work explores the difference between presence, being present and rituals of presentation while working with three break-dancers from the Salt Lake community.”

Each night will close with the entire class performing together in a premiere work by Seattle-based guest choreographer, Kate Wallich titled, “Knock em Dead.” Wallich was chosen as one of Dance Magazine’s “25 TO WATCH” in January 2015.

“Shirts and Skins” week one premieres on March 30th and has shows through April 1st, 2nd. Week two takes the stage April 21st, 22nd, and the 23rd, and features work by the second half of the Senior class. Kate Wallich’s piece will be performed during both weekends. Performances are at the University of Utah Marriott Center for Dance.
