A veritable feast for the senses, The University of Utah’s Performing Dance Company presents electrifying dance, film, multimedia and 100 pounds of falling rice! This concert, running October 18, 19, 20 and 25, 26, 27 will feature not only the collaboration of Guggenheim fellow Ellen Bromberg and world-renowned choreographer Victoria Marks, but also stunning choreography by Eric Handman, guest artist and dance icon Susan McLain, and Kaye Richards.
Conversations, a film by Ellen Bromberg, documents the experience of dancers and Iraqi War veterans who participated in Victoria Marks’ workshop held at the University of Utah in March 2007. Marks’ workshop uniquely juxtaposes artistry with politics of war. Though their backgrounds are varied, the dancers and veterans share their stories, core values and assumptions about one another through dialogue and movement metaphor.
Haunted by the past and in a state of limbo, the marooned dancers in choreographer Eric Handman’s Ghost Ship perform with nuanced precision and feral virtuosity. Through a cascade of memories, time leaves its mark on the dancers.
Guest artist Susan McLain’s reconstruction of In the Company of Men is a modern ballet inspired by nine Surrealist images of Belgian painter Rene Magritte, who’s work provokes disquiet and mounting panic. This multimedia, theatrical production portrays the menacing and seductive images of Magritte’s work, while illustrating one woman’s pathologic desire to be loved and accepted by men.
You, Me, Us, choreographed by Kaye Richards, features a sextet of powerful female performers, exploring one individual’s identity and the ways in which she negotiates shifting social landscapes. Set to a haunting musical score by John Williams, Richards’ new work flows seamlessly through space, expressing punctuated strength and tender simplicity.
Performances are at 7:30 PM, Thursdays through Saturdays, October 18-20 and 25-27 at the Hayes Christensen Theatre in the Marriott Center for Dance on the University of Utah Campus. Tickets are $10 for general public, or $7 for students, seniors, and U of U faculty/staff, and are available at the door one hour prior to the performance. Tickets can also be purchased through Kingsbury Hall ticket office, www.kingtix.org or by calling 581-7100.
