Ellen Bromberg and Victoria Marks’ film collaboration, "Conversations", documents the stories shared between dancers and Iraqi war veterans. Eric Handman’s "Ghostship" unleashes feral virtuosity and 100 pounds of cascading rice onto the stage. Guest artist Susan McLain reveals the magical mysteries of Rene Magritte in the menacing and seductive multi-media production of "In the Company of Men". "You, Me, Us" by Kaye Richards explores soulful, sorrowful and haunting relationships. (click here for full press release)

A film collaboration between Ellen Bromberg and Victoria Marks
November 2, 2007; 10:00-11:30am
Studio 240, Marriott Center for Dance
*Panel comprised of workshop participants, moderated by Ellen Bromberg
“Conversations” documents the experience of dancers and Iraqi War veterans who participated in Victoria Marks’ workshop held at the University of Utah in March 2007. Marks’ workshop uniquely juxtaposes artistry with politics of war. Though their backgrounds are varied, the dancers and veterans share their stories, core values and assumptions about one another through dialogue and movement metaphor. This project was made possible, in part, from a generous grant from the University of Utah’s Council of Dee Fellows.

Performing Dance Company ’s Spring Concert slips into the surreal as choreographer Carly Allred examines deterioration as the dancers revert to a beast-like state. Pamela Geber transports five women into a sexy, awkward and slightly askew reality. Animation, movement, and images uncover vulnerability and connection in a collaborative work by Satu Hummasti and Lien Fan Shen. Stephen Koester explores the subtle shades of language, emotion, and human connection.. The reconstruction of Schubert* highlights Murray Louis’ influential and stylized technique accompanied by alumni from the School of Music. (Click here for the full press release)

We're pleased to let you know that we had an outstanding year of performances in 2004/2005.
Performing Dance Company (PDC) seasons featured choreography by faculty members: Eric Handman, Brent Schneider, Satu Hummasti, Abby Fiat, Kaye Richards, Pamela Geber, and Stephen Koester. PDC was honored to perform the works of guest artists Charlotte Boye-Christensen of Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company; José Navas set by Montréal Danse's Kathy Casey, Rachel Harris, and Frédéric Marier; and Sara Pearson and Patirk Widrig of PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER.
Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig, Artistic Directors of PEARSONWIDRIG DANCETHEATER, performed a duet concert that had the audience rolling with laughter and later moved with sensitivity.
We were amazed by An Evening of Choreography: Stephen Koester UT & Keith Johnson CA. Stephen Koester performed a solo and choreographed group works. Keith Johnson's choreography was performed by dancers from his company Keith Johnson/Dancers.
The Graduate Concert entitled The Whole Story and Other Half Truths featured choreography and performances by MFA students Karin Fenn, Sarah M. Barry, Arwen Rogers, Robin McLelland, Ryann Christina Nelson, Michaela Cannon, and guest choreographer Estelle Clareton.
We had two Senior Concerts, A Little Less Conversation... and ...A Little More Action, choreographed by the 24 graduating Seniors and performed by Modern majors, community dancers, and children. The Senior Class also performed a piece by guests Sara Pearson and Patrik Widrig.
Two Student Concerts fully produced by Modern majors rounded out the year.
New in 2005 was the Alumni Concert. Modern Dance Alumni returned to perform (dancing and singing) and present their choreography. We thank alumni Bill Evans (1970), Nicholas Cendese (2002), Natosha Washington (2004), Elsa Flores (1987), Gesel Mason (1994), Marilyn (Henkus) McLaughlin (1983), and Diann Sichel (1971) who contributed to this inaugural event.
