OVERVIEW

8th International Dance for the Camera Festival and Workshop with Katrina McPherson

The University of Utah’s Departments of Modern Dance and Film and Media Arts are pleased to announce two opportunities to work with award-winning Scottish dance filmmaker, Katrina McPherson, in her first American residencies. Set in the beautiful mountain city of Salt Lake this two-week workshop offers in-depth experience for choreographers and filmmakers in shooting and editing dance for the camera. Ms. McPherson will hold screenings, discussions, demonstrations, and will oversee the creation of screendance studies by each participant. Editing facilities and personnel will be available, as will dancers for choreographic projects.

HOUSING:
Housing is available at the University Guest House on the University of Utah campus, a short walk or shuttle bus ride from the Marriott Center for Dance or the Film and Media Arts Building, where the festival and workshop will be held. Please visit their website at www.guesthouse.utah.edu. A block of rooms has been reserved under the name of The Dance for the Camera Festival, for a discounted rate. Please call their toll free number, 888-416-4075, to ask for this rate. These rooms will be held at this rate until two weeks prior to each workshop (Workshop #1: until Sept. 1, and Workshop #2, until Sept. 5). After these dates, rooms will be available at the standard rate, however availability cannot be guaranteed. There is a light-rail connection from the campus to downtown Salt Lake City where many other accommodation options are available as well. The train runs every 15 minutes and takes about 5 minutes to get downtown.

Call for Submissions of student works for The 8th International Dance for the Camera Festival

The University of Utah Department of Modern of Modern Dance and the Division of Film Studies are pleased to announce a call for submissions of original dance works made specifically for the medium of video or film. An evening of student works will be presented on Thursday, September 15, 2011 in conjunction with the International Dance for the Camera Festival. Being accepted are:

Choreography for the Camera

- original work made specifically for the video/film medium or a staged work remade for the camera (performance documentations will not be adjudicated).

Documentary

- productions which include interviews or other educational elements in addition to choreography.

Experimental/Digital Technologies

- work that extends the boundaries of the medium and exists only in the realm of video, film, or new technologies.


Applicants submitting student works must be or have been enrolled in a fulltime university undergraduate or graduate degree program when the work was made. The postmark deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm, July 15, 2011. Only Region 1 or All Region DVD formats will be accepted. Online applications with working video links will also be accepted.

KATRINA McPHERSON

Award-winning artist Katrina McPherson has been creating screendance for over 20 years. She has wide experience as a dancer and choreographer, as a director of television arts programs for the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 and as a video dance-maker. She has collaborated with many different dance artists and companies, both in Scotland and abroad.

Her works are regularly screened at international festivals and include ‘Pace’ (Marisa Zanotti, BBC/Arts Council of GB, 1995), ‘Moment’ (Winner, Best Screen Choreography, IMZ Dance Screen, Monaco 2000), ‘Sense-8’ (Katy Dymoke, Capture/Arts Council England, 2001) and ‘The Truth’ (Paulo Ribeiro/Fin Walker/Ricochet Dance Productions 2003). Katrina has also made documentary films with choreographer/teacher Royston Maldoom, with Adugna Dance Theatre in Addis Ababa and in Holloway Women’s Prison. In summer 2010, Katrina collaborated with Tibetan/Chinese choreographer Sang Jijia and Simon Fildes to make ‘There is a Place’, a new video dance work that was premiered in Hong Kong in November 2010 and has had subsequent screenings in Macau, Beijing, Amsterdam, New York and San Francisco.

Katrina is a much sought-after teacher and has led master-classes and workshops in Scotland, London, Germany and Australia. Katrina is the author of ‘Making Video Dance - a step by step guide to creating dance for the screen.’ (Routledge, 2006). This is the first workbook to follow the entire process of video dance production: from having an idea, through to choreographing for the screen, filming and editing, and distribution.

Since 1996, much of Katrina’s work has been made with editor/artist Simon Fildes. They co-direct the Scottish Highland-based production company Goat and are responsible for many single screen, installation and web-based projects including www.hyperchoreography.org and the hugely successful www.move-me.com project, which toured the UK, Holland, Australia and New Zealand.
