Integrated Movement Studies Program
Dear Potential Graduate
Students in Modern Dance,
Integrated Movement Studies is very pleased to announce that the University
of Utah is offering the unique opportunity for graduate students in
their MFA program in Modern Dance to further enrich their graduate
education by enrolling in the Integrated Movement Studies Certificate
Program in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analysis. This bold step ensures
the University of Utah's place as the major center for not only Dance,
but also the larger area of Movement Study in the country. Several
full-tuition scholarships will be offered by the University for each
Certificate program.
A Certificate Program in
Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies is already in place in the Department
of Modern Dance, with students coming from around the world to study
with the excellent and innovative faculty of the program. The department
has recognized the power of the Laban/Bartenieff work as a tool, and
has also had sufficient vision to see that the field of Movement Studies
will eventually make important contributions to humankind's knowledge
in areas outside of Dance as well, thus encouraging scholarly work
in the very important area of research into the fundamental nature
of movement. Why is this important?
We believe that in the
future an understanding of the essential elements of movement will
be paramount in grappling with understanding CHANGE in any field,
because the essence of change is movement. As human beings we "swim"
in a sea of movement, yet it is practically invisible to us--as water
is to fish. The Laban/Bartenieff work provides tools for actually
seeing and recording movement and awakening to its messages. The system
is a powerful tool for artistic and scholarly growth. Just as musicians
need an understanding of music theory, so professionals in the field
of Dance need to be fully versed in the theory that underlies their
own field.
Laban/Bartenieff Movement
Analysis provides a very comprehensive theoretical framework for the
study of movement and its meaning. We encourage all graduate students
in the Department of Modern Dance to consider enriching their education
with this innovative program.
Sincerely,
Janice Meaden, Peggy Hackney,
and Ed Groff

Specific Program Information
The Integrated Movement Studiessm Certificate Program
in Laban/Bartenieff Movement Studies
Today's complex world requires
versatile, creative approaches to education, work, healing, art, and
community. Practice and understanding of movement is vital in training
people for active participation in a challenging, changing culture.
An understanding of human communication requires intelligence grounded
in the body. The Integrated Movement Studiessm Certificate Program
is a graduate program for the comprehensive study of human movement
and its meaning.
Participants in this program
will gain an understanding of the structural, functional and expressive
aspects of human movement. Students become more coordinated and dynamic
as movers. They learn to observe recurring patterns, personal preferences,
and how to facilitate new movement possibilities in themselves and
others for professional development. The Program is appropriate for
individuals in any field, which uses the practice, observation, or
assessment of movement expression, movement skill development, movement
reeducation, or therapy.
Participants learn to perceive,
describe, record, and make meaning of human movement. In the exploration
of the field of human movement students focus on Rudolf Laban's theories
of Body, Effort, Shape, and Space and Irmgard Bartenieff's Bartenieff
Fundamentals. In addition they are introduced to other theories that
address interpretive frameworks for meaning-making in movement. These
include:
Charles M. Johnston's
Creative Systems Theorysm
Judith Kestenberg's Kestenberg Movement Profile
Warren Lamb's Movement Pattern Analysis
Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen's Body-Mind Centeringsm
Students are encouraged
to explore and manifest what is personally meaningful to them. Many
students feel the Program enhances creativity, growth and integration.
This Program is engaging, fun and profoundly enlivening.
What is Integrated
Movement Studies sm?
Integrated Movement Studies
(IMSsm) is a training team composed of Certified Laban/Bartenieff
Movement Analysts Peggy Hackney, Janice Meaden, and Pam Schick. They
are movement educators specializing in teaching about human movement
communication and expression. The team's work is based in the theories
of Rudolf Laban's Laban Movement Analysis, Irmgard Bartenieff's Bartenieff
Fundamentals and Dr. Charles Johnston's Creative Systems Theorysm.
The IMSsm faculty is an internationally known teaching team that has
developed a unique approach to the study of Laban's and Bartenieff's
theories. All members of the IMSsm faculty studied with Irmgard Bartenieff,
a student of Laban and founder of the Laban/Bartenieff Institute of
Movement Studies in New York City. Peggy, Pam and Janice have worked
together as dance artists, movement educators and as Certification
Faculty in the Laban/Bartenieff material for 30 years. The team expertise
draws from the areas of professional dance, psychotherapy, multicultural
education, innovative adult learning theory and somatics.
IMSsm Participants
The people who come to this program are incredible!! Colleagues Peggy
Hackney, Janice Meaden, Pam Schick, and Ed Groff have been teaching
certification in the Laban/Bartenieff work together for over 20 years.
We are thrilled with the mix of people who are drawn to this work.
Participants come from all areas within the movement domain: actors,
dancers, movement therapists, somatic and physical therapists, Kindergarten
- 12th grade teachers, University professors in dance and cross/multicultural
movement studies, athletes and coaches and people who are interested
in personal development. We have a wonderful mix of movers.
What one participant said
about the program:
"I feel I have received the fullest, most complete humane education
of my life in the IMS program. What made this program so effective
was the richness of the material and the instructors depth of knowledge
that they are so deeply and joyfully committed to sharing. The entire
IMS experience was an enlivened, embodied model for life at large
and was truly transformational to me. "Marcia Nolte, SOMA Practitioner
IMSsm Curriculum
Content and Course Descriptions
The IMSsm Certification
Programs consists of approximately 209 classes totaling approximately
418 contact hours of in-class time. In addition to this there are
out of class assignments, Interim projects and a Certification Project.
The program involves the study of:
Laban Movement Analysis
Theory: The study of Rudolf Laban's theories of Body, Effort, Shape
and Space Harmony including the symbol systems used for recording
in each of these content areas. In class and Interim projects are
required to synthesize learning.
Bartenieff Fundamentals
& Developmental Movement: The study of Irmgard Bartenieff's system
of body reeducation based on Laban's theories, neurological developmental
movement patterning and physical therapy. The student explores efficient
movement patterning and is trained in the art of therapeutic touch
for movement reorganization. In class and Interim projects are required
to synthesize learning.
Touch for Movement Repatterning:
The purpose of this course is to train participants in developing
the skills and the ethical understandings in using touch as an inroad
to movement training, education and movement therapy.
Observation & Motif
Writing: The goal of this course is to train the participant in accurately
analyzing movement and recording it in Motif symbols. Motif is a shorthand
symbol system intended to capture the themes observed in movement.
The student learns processes for designing and implementing observation
research projects. Observation and Motif notation skills are practiced
watching video, in class movement, and actual life situations. In
class and Interim projects are required to synthesize learning.
Seminar in Movement Studies:
The goal of this course is for the trainee to gain an understanding
of the larger field of Movement Studies and the application areas
within the field. The course gives a historical context for the Laban/Bartenieff
work and aids the student in gaining knowledge concerning key ideas
and core values related to the system. The student is asked to read
a variety of primary and secondary resources to become acquainted
with the major developers of the work. The methodologies used in the
course encourage critical thinking to evoke intellectual questions
concerning the larger issues related to human movement. An emphasis
is placed on speaking and writing skills. In class and Interim projects
are required to synthesize learning.
Community Gathering &
Movement Choir: These classes are faculty facilitated open forums
of expression and exploration. Participants use this time as an opportunity
to discuss and explore in movement issues that need to be addressed
on a community level. The group learns to design with and use the
concepts of Laban's Movement Choir to organize group movement events
that embody the concerns and desires of the individual and the group.
It is an arena for applying the IMSsm work to everyday interactions
and negotiations.
The group learns about the diversity of needs and interests, while
individuals practice and come to appreciate a variety of leadership
styles and formats.
Advising and Student Feedback:
The goal of advising and the evaluation process is to provide the
student with constructive awareness in the comprehension, manifestation
and integration of the material. To meet this goal, each student is
assigned an advisor that servers as a guide and mentor throughout
the program. The participant receives one to one and group advising
sessions, in classroom coaching, feedback on written and movement
work and assessment on all projects and final exams.
In addition to movement
and written evaluation each session, students work independently on
assigned projects during the Interim periods and produce a Final Certification
Project applying IMS theories in a field of personal interest. Along
with the Final Certification Project, a final written and movement
exam serve as culminating and integrative events.
