U of U Modern Dance Department Senior Concerts
The next generation of dance artists in Utah is about to enter the real world. The U of U Modern Dance Department’s seniors are exiting their ivory tower with a bang and a lot of new moves. These fresh artists aren’t satisfied with their daddy’s modern dance and have spiced it up with other dance styles, fusing modern with jazz, ballet, folk, theater, martial arts and even liquid. The seventeen feisty dance students are choreographing and producing their very own concerts at the Marriott Center for Dance on the U of U campus. Aqui (Here) will be March 23-25 and Agora (Now) will be April 6-8, at 7:30pm, each weekend featuring half of the class. Each senior has choreographed what will be his or her exit statement to the U’s rigorous BFA program. Together, they will show off just what a college dance education has blessed them with.
In both concerts, the seniors themselves will physically enter and exit many times in a stunningly biting dance choreographed this January by acclaimed San Francisco artist Ben Levy. Choreographed in partnership with the dancers, this piece opens up a window into the relationships of this tight-knit group of dancers. And in the same eight minutes, Levy also showcases the seniors’ highly tuned understanding of their craft.
These up-and-coming dance artists are not to be missed as they exit university and enter the dance world. See how dance is being redefined for this millennium right here in our own backyard at the U of U campus’ Marriott Center for Dance, March 23-25 and April 6-8 at 7:30 pm. Tickets at the door are $10 general admission, $7 for students and seniors. Tickets can also be purchased through Kingsbury Hall Performing Arts Ticket Office at 581-7100.
