Jay Kim

Professor Kim is originally from South Korea and is an Associate Professor with tenure in the School of Dance at the University of Utah. He earned his MFA from the University of Utah, his BFA from the Sejong University, and is an ABT® National Training Curriculum Certified Teacher in Pre-Primary through Level 3. 

He received his fundamental training on full scholarship from the Kirov Academy of Ballet training under Alla Sizova, Roudolf Kharatian, and Vladimir Djouloukhadze, and in Korea on full scholarship from the Dance Arts Institute, Chang-Mu Dance Conservatory, and Kwang-Ju Arts High School. 

In his professional career, he was awarded 9 grand prix and gold medals in international competitions in Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, and Korean Traditional Dance categories. He danced as a Principal and Soloist with Universal Ballet Company across 13 countries on the major stages of the world under the direction of Oleg Vinogradov, Bruce Steivel, and Julia Moon, Korean National Ballet under the direction of Yuri Grigorovich, Korean Ballet Theatre under the direction of Cha-Young Suh, and Dayton Ballet Theatre under the direction of Dermot Burke. 

He is the founder and Artistic Director of the International Ballet Summer Intensive on the University of Utah Asia Campus in Incheon, Korea that hosts ballet students from America and Korea on the English immersion Incheon Global Campus that houses the worlds’ top universities.

His original choreographic works have been performed internationally in Spain, Korea, and Costa Rica and nationally in Michigan, Nevada, Texas, and Utah. His works include a classical full-length Cinderella production, Sentience, Metamorphosis, Reciprocity,Remembrance, Enraptured, Binari, Etudes, The Human Experience, and Elegy that have been performed by Seoul Ballet Theatre, Kwangju City Ballet, Korean Ballet Theatre, Ballet Frontier of Texas, Utah Ballet, Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble, Utah Metropolitan Ballet Company, Utah Regional Ballet, have been presented at Youth America Grand Prix competitions, LINK Dance Festival, and awarded as a finalist in the Utah Regional Ballet Choreography Design Competition and the Utah Metropolitan Ballet Director’s Choice Choreography Design competition.

He has served as master teacher with the Korea International Ballet Competition, World Ballet Grand Prix Singapore and New York, Seoul Ballet Theatre, Kwangju City Ballet, Korean Ballet Theatre, Kirov Academy of Ballet, Academy of Nevada Ballet Theatre, Mercyhurst University, Oakland University, Sejong University, Brigham Young University, Centro de Danza Company, Folklore Festival day of Europe, Great Lakes Dance Festival, Ballet Center of Fort Worth, LINK Choreography Festival, Salt Contemporary Dance, Salt Lake City Ballet, Jacqueline’s School of Ballet, Metropolitan Ballet Academy and Theatre, and Art Ballet Center of Seoul.

He is an ABT® Project Plie Partner Teacher, serves as a partner for Kirov Academy of Ballet, has presented at and serves on the Membership and Outreach Committee of CORPS de Ballet International, has published in the Dance Research Journal of Korea, is a Steering Committee member for the Korea International Ballet Competition, and is a member of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science.
