Content Advisory for Choreographers

The School of Dance approaches performance as a mature artistic practice that explores a wide range of human experiences and contemporary issues. As such, our productions may include subject matter, language, physical movement, and/or presentations of the human body that extend beyond entertainment. Some material may be thought-provoking or challenging, depending on individual values, perspectives, and life experiences.

As a member institution of the American College Dance Association, the School of Dance provides the following ACDA guidance regarding material that may warrant a content advisory. Choreographers are requested to notify the School in advance of any content that could reasonably be considered sensitive or challenging. This process ensures that the School can make informed determinations about whether content advisories are appropriate for audiences. The following list outlines examples for consideration:

 

Production Effects: 

Does the dance contain any of the following? Note: the following effects may not be available at this conference.

    1. None

    2. Strobing lights

    3. Flashes of light

    4. Smoke/Fog

    5. Loud sounds or music

    6. Extended periods of loud sounds or music

    7. Gunshots

    8. Other

 

Content Warning: 

To the best of your knowledge, does the dance contain any of the following? Note: This will be shared with adjudicators who prefer to have it.

    1. To the best of my knowledge, no Content Warning is needed

    2. Rape and sexual assault

    3. Abuse (physical, mental, emotional, verbal, sexual)

    4. Child abuse and/or pedophilia

    5. Animal cruelty and/or death

    6. Self-Harm and/or other intentional self-injury

    7. Suicide

    8. Excessive or gratuitous violence

    9. Needles

    10. Depiction of pornography

    11. Incest

    12. Kidnapping (forceful deprivation of/disregard for personal autonomy)

    13. Stalking

    14. Death and/or dying

    15. Pregnancy and/or childbirth

    16. Miscarriages and/or abortion

    17. Blood

    19. Jump scare

    20. Mental illness

    21. Eating disorders, including depiction of disordered eating behavior (e.g. vomiting) and diet culture

    24. Police brutality

    25. White supremacy

    26. War
