Apply & Audition

Undergraduate Auditions

Thank you for your interest in our degrees. Formal acceptance into the School of Dance (including incoming freshman majors, minors, and transfer students) is dependent on two factors. Students must:

  • Apply for admissions to the University of Utah

  • Audition for the School of Dance major or minor

Formal acceptance is contingent upon being admitted into the University of Utah and passing your School of Dance audition. To apply for admission to the University of Utah, please check with the Admissions Office for all information about the University application process and deadlines. Although recommended, you do not need to be admitted to the University of Utah in order to audition. The earlier you apply for admissions to the University of Utah, the better your chances to receive early admissions offers, scholarships, and acceptance into the School. Various admissions deadlines start as soon as December 1, so don't wait! Visit admissions.utah.edu/apply.

To sign up for an audition to the School of Dance, please complete the Audition Application below. Within the application, you’ll be asked which audition you’ll be attending. Dates, times, and locations will be posted below as they are made available. To be considered for University of Utah merit scholarships or School of Dance departmental scholarships, please visit our Scholarship Page.

Your application is not considered complete until all of the following steps have been completed:

If paying the Audition Fee is a financial burden, please reach out to info@dance.utah.edu to request an Audition Fee Waiver. The University of Utah School of Dance is dedicated to ensuring all prospective students are able to secure an audition opportunity regardless of financial status. You can also request a Fee Waiver for your application for admissions to the University of Utah here. The inability to pay a college application fee or audition fee should never be a barrier to applying to the University of Utah School of Dance.

An automatic confirmation will be sent when you have completed your Audition Application and paid the Audition Fee.

  • Registration for auditions will begin 30 minutes before the audition time posted below. Most of our in-person auditions held at the Marriott Center for Dance on the University of Utah campus are held over weekends in which we will be presenting evening performances featuring students from the School of Dance in our Hayes Christensen Theatre in the Marriott Center for Dance. You are invited to attend these performances for free as our guests if your schedule permits.

  • One of the many things that makes the University of Utah School of Dance unique is that alongside a Ballet BFA or Modern Dance BFA major, it is possible to do a second major. From Business and Kinesiology to Education and English, our students are capable of anything they set their minds to; all it takes is a little bit of extra planning and organization to achieve all of your academic dreams at the U!

In a survey taken in 2021, approximately 60% of students in the School of Dance have a second major, and an additional one third are in the Honors College. The best way to learn more about doing a second major is to reach out to the school or department you would like to be a part of to learn more about their course requirements, and if applicable, additional applications.

Not sure if you want to do a second major? Feel free to explore our many major offerings, or reach out to our academic advising!

MASTER YOUR CRAFT

Graduate Auditions

Dance is a way of knowing.

Dance is an embodied and energetic way of experiencing and understanding oneself in real time and space. As a performing art, kinesthetic experience, creative process and cultural representation, dance is a source, and interpretation, of artistic, personal, theoretical, social, cultural, and historical ideas.

The School of Dance is an empowering educational community that thrives on a spirit of investigation. Anchored in a vibrant Research 1 context, students and faculty investigate a range of creative and scholarly pursuits in areas including performance, choreography, Screendance, improvisation, pedagogy, history and theory, media arts, and community-engaged projects.

Our MFA Degrees:

  • are 2-year, 60 credit hour degrees, accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD)

  • develop dynamic contributors to the ever-changing field of dance, as evidenced by our vast network of successful alumni

  • offer curricula organized around physical, creative, scholarly, and pedagogical practices

  • grant each student flexibility to pursue individual creative and scholarly interests and professional development opportunities

  • foster a community of artist-educators comprised of faculty, guest artists, and students from around the globe

  • are highly competitive, admitting a limited number of graduate students each year

The MFA in Ballet is designed to deepen one’s knowledge of ballet pedagogy, choreography, history, and theory. MFA candidates may elect to conduct either scholarly or creative thesis projects.

The MFA in Modern Dance is a practice-based program focused on physical, creative, and theoretically informed artmaking and pedagogy. Thesis projects are creative in nature, typically culminating in a choreographic project.

The Screendance Certificate is an interdisciplinary collaboration between the School of Dance and the Department of Film & Media Arts. The degree requires a 16-credit, on-site commitment and can be completed as an additional credential while pursuing an MFA degree in the School of Dance or Department of Film & Media Arts.

We seek applicants who:

  • have established themselves as experienced performers, choreographers, teachers, curators, administrators and/or researchers who are now looking to delve more deeply into their practices

  • can communicate a compelling idea for a self-directed research project - scholarly or creative in nature - that serves as the culmination of the graduate degree

Funding Opportunities

All applicants may apply to receive various degrees of funding, including a full tuition waiver and stipend as Teaching Assistants (TA). Strong applicants for TA funding demonstrate experience successfully teaching dance classes that align with the School of Dance’s existing undergraduate curricula and/or offer new perspectives and topics that will enrich our existing curricula. Strong applicants also possess 3+ years of professional experience as performers, choreographers, stagers, and/or teachers and are familiar with the artists and practices currently shaping the field.

Applicants residing outside the continental United States may be considered for admission without attending the on-campus interview/audition if they have made prior arrangements with the Director of Graduate Studies.
