SOD Photo Shoots
The School of Dance (SOD) may hire a professional photographer to take photographs during SOD performances, classes, dress rehearsals, and other activities or events. Additionally, the SOD may schedule invited photoshoots with a professional photographer. The purpose of all photoshoots is to attain high-quality photographs for School, College, and University marketing, communication, educational, artistic, and other lawful purposes.

Photographer Rights
Photographers working with the SOD are subject to the terms of the SOD Photography Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Under the MOU, photographs and other materials created by the photographer are the sole property of the SOD, excluding any pre-existing work product or materials of the photographer. The MOU also provides the SOD with the right to use, reproduce, publish, display, and share the photographs and other materials through print, digital, social media, University publications, and other media or publications.

The MOU also grants the photographer license to use, reproduce, and display the work for their own self-promotion, professional portfolio, website, and social media channels. The MOU asks photographers to provide appropriate credit when sharing photographs, including credit to the University of Utah School of Dance and, to the best of his/her ability, choreographers / restagers, dancers, costume and lighting designer, other production personnel, the College of Fine Arts, and ARTSPASS.

Student Participation, Invited Photoshoots
The SOD may schedule invited photoshoots. Decisions regarding who is invited to participate in photoshoots are based on the needs of the SOD, including input from the choreographers/restagers, concert directors, CFA marketing team, and SOD Director.

All students participating in invited SOD photoshoots must complete the SOD Student Information Sheet which includes the University of Utah Liability Waiver and College of Fine Arts Photo/Media Release form. Students who have opted out of the photo/media release will not be invited to participate in photoshoots.

Student Participation, Dress Rehearsal Shoots
The majority of SOD concerts will have professional photography taken during the final dress rehearsal. Students opting out of the photo/media release may be inadvertently captured in some dress rehearsal shots. The SOD makes every effort to remove these from the pool of shared photos, and these photos will not be used for marketing purposes. If anyone notices a dancer who has opted out of the media release captured in a photo that has been shared, they should notify the SOD Front Office immediately so that appropriate actions may be taken.

Photo Sharing/Use
Although photo shoots are intended primarily for School, College, and University purposes, the SOD makes selected/edited photographs available to SOD faculty, staff, students, and authorized guests for their personal use. SOD faculty, staff, students, and authorized guests may access available photos using the “Production & Event Photos” link at the bottom of the weekly announcements.

Given the labor and data storage required to maintain this photo archive, only selected/edited images will be shared. The SOD does not have the storage capacity to share every photograph taken.

Photographs may be used for appropriate personal, educational, professional, or promotional purposes, subject to the terms of the SOD Photography MOU and the credit expectations below. The SOD assumes no responsibility for unauthorized reproduction, redistribution, or other use of photography by faculty, staff, students, or guests.

Credit
All SOD students, staff, faculty, and guests are expected to credit the photographer and the individuals involved in the creation of the work when using photographs for personal, educational, professional, or social media purposes. Credit should include, as applicable, the University of Utah School of Dance, the photographer, choreographers / restagers, dancers, costume and lighting designer, other production personnel, the College of Fine Arts, and ARTSPASS.

The SOD will make every effort to credit the photographer in printed materials, online programs, social media posts, and marketing or communication pieces.
