Guests accustomed to working with professional companies may find university settings different. All School of Dance guests are expected to uphold the following expectations:

1. Class/Rehearsal Start & End Times: Guests are expected to adhere to class start and end times. A class or rehearsal ending late may cause students to be late for their next class, rehearsal, or other commitments.

2. Musical Accompaniment: Guests are offered a musician to provide accompaniment for classes. Guests who prefer to use their own music should notify us as soon as possible so we can release the musician.

3. First Day Introductions: On the first day of a guest visit, the guest will be introduced to students by a faculty member. Students are curious about guests’ research and professional experiences, so guests are encouraged to share relevant information about their training and career.

4. Solicitation: Due to the educational nature and mission of SOD classes, guests are not permitted to promote businesses, services, nor literature to profit from students.

5. Consent to touch: Some students may not be comfortable with certain types of physical contact touch when offered feedback. Guests should always request permission of students before using touch. Comfort levels may change day-to-day or even within the span of a class. We ask that guests refrain from any kind of touch that could cause harm or be perceived as invasive.

6. Addressing Students:

   • GENDER NEUTRAL LANGUAGE - To support a welcoming and inclusive environment, we ask that guests attempt to use gender-neutral language whenever possible. An individual's personal identity may not match their outward appearance, and gender-neutral language can help avoid misunderstanding and/or inadvertently misgendering an individual. Guests and all in our community are welcome to share their own personal pronouns if they choose and invite others to do so if they are comfortable; however, this may not be required and should not be expected.

   • NAMES - It may be challenging to learn all the dancers' names in a master class, but we hope that guests can offer individual as well as group feedback. However, during a rehearsal process, and especially when sufficient time is shared with the same group of people, we ask that guests strive to learn all cast and understudy members’ names.

7. Conceptual Content: We ask guests who are working with concepts or theories in rehearsals or classes to share any literature, links or artists the students should consider. As an educational setting, we aspire to teach dancers who are knowledgeable and articulate.

8. Mature Content: We request that guests avoid using language that could be interpreted as vulgar or offensive (this includes clothing that displays such language). If a class or choreography contains movement material that incorporates mature elements, such as sexually suggestive movement or aggressive and potentially dangerous movement, we ask that guests introduce this material mindfully.  If you sense that students are uncomfortable with executing such movement, please offer time and space for conversations about the material and/or possibilities for acceptable adaptations.

9. Difficulties or Questions: At any time, guests are welcome to seek support from the SOD Director or other relevant SOD faculty, such as a Concert Director or Director of Undergraduate Studies. If a guest thinks a student is behaving in a disrespectful or inappropriate manner, we ask that the guest please communicate with the student directly and privately. Guests should also notify the SOD Director about the incident. If the behavior continues, a guest may ask the student to leave the class or rehearsal.
