Dance Minor

About the Degree
The Dance Minor at the University of Utah enables students to engage in the intellectual, technical, and creative investigation that the School of Dance is nationally known for, while completing a major in another discipline. Dance minors may take a selection of classes from both non-majors and majors curriculum and are also welcome to audition for School of Dance productions.

 School of Dance course availability for Dance Minors is limited because the majority of School of Dance course offerings are part of the dance major curriculum (Ballet BFA, Contemporary Dance BFA, or Dance Teaching BFA). To ensure that majors who need courses to graduate have priority registration, Dance Minors are prohibited from registering for majors courses until the week prior to the start of each semester. If there are seats available in the course(s) at that time, Dance Minors can request a permission code to enroll in the course(s). Additionally, Dance Minors may only register for advanced-level majors courses if they meet relevant prerequisites and receive instructor approval, ensuring the student is at an appropriate skill-level for the course.

Academic Coursework
The University of Utah is accredited by the National Associations for Schools of Dance (NASD) and our coursework follows the core curricular requirements outlined in NASD standards which includes: Performance, Choreography, Theoretical and Historical Studies, and Teaching. The Program Requirements, including a complete list of courses available to complete the degree, and Program Learning Outcomes are available through the Academic Catalog.

Audition & Admissions
All incoming students must audition for admission into the Dance Minor as well as comply with regular University admission procedures (review the information for Undergraduate Admissions & Auditions). Declared Dance Minors wishing to transition into one of our BFA majors must re-audition for acceptance into the major. Students admitted as BFA majors in the School of Dance are eligible to pursue the Dance Minor without an additional audition and may contact Academic Advising to declare the minor. At this time, we are unable to provide scholarships for Dance Minors.
