Dance Teaching BFA

About the Degree
The Dance Teaching BFA at the University of Utah is a four-year, professional degree that comes with teaching licensure, fully preparing and certifying students to teach dance in K-12 public schools as well as other settings. This degree prepares elementary, junior high, middle school, and high school dance educators. K-12 dance teaching requires both in-depth knowledge of subject matter (dance) and skill in applying educational concepts and principles that are developmentally appropriate. Students pursuing the Dance Teaching BFA may take a selection of majors courses and are also welcome to audition for School of Dance productions.

The College of Education’s Urban Institute for Teacher Education (UITE) oversees teacher licensure at the University of Utah. Students pursuing an educator license should contact UITE as soon as possible to learn about deadlines, background check requirements, and student teaching at uite.utah.edu/students/advising/ or (801) 581-6818. Teaching jobs are available across the country and around the world. Once a teaching license is obtained in one state, transferring your credentials is sometimes as easy as filling out a form and paying a registration fee.

Academic Coursework
The University of Utah is accredited by the National Associations for Schools of Dance (NASD) and our coursework follows the core curricular requirements outlined in NASD standards which includes: Performance, Choreography, Theoretical and Historical Studies, and Teaching. The Program Requirements, including a complete list of courses available to complete the degree, and Program Learning Outcomes are available through the Academic Catalog.

Audition & Admissions
All incoming students must audition for admission into either the Ballet BFA or the Contemporary Dance BFA as well as comply with regular University admission procedures (review the information for Undergraduate Admissions & Auditions). Students interested in pursuing the Dance Teaching BFA would then work with the contacts below as well as Academic Advising to declare the major.
